When I started this personal blog back in the spring, I had every intention of updating it on a regular basis. Somehow life got in the way, but I guess that’s a good thing. Here’s a short list of what I’ll be doing for the next few weeks:

I’m always looking for a good concert or something fun to do so if you have any suggestions just let me know.

Crafts made from repurposed materials

Crafts made from repurposed materials

Every now and then I get in the mood to dig out the glue, staple gun, fabric, and ribbon to make a few handcrafted items. In the past, I have only done this when I needed a gift for a special occasion, but just couldn’t find what I wanted in a store. For the most part, I have traded in the craft supplies for sandpaper and power tools to work on more labor-intensive furniture repurposing projects.

A few weeks ago, I decided it was time to gather my craft supplies again to make some repurposed, handcrafted items for The HodgePodgery, a new shop in midtown Harrisburg. If you want to see what I have been working on, just stop by the shop when you are in the neighborhood, or check out Repurposability, my new tumblelog.

In keeping with this blog’s recurring technology theme, it is worth noting that I met @HodgePodgery’s co-owner, Dawn, at a Tweetup a few months ago. This is more evidence that it is really worthwhile to seek out and find your bee people.

WordPress Harrisburg badge

WordPress Harrisburg

Last week a new tech group in Central PA met for the first time. The group is for WordPress enthusiasts and is organized by Ryan Duff. WordPress Harrisburg is for WordPress users of all levels, from novice to expert.

If you live in Central Pennsylvania and develop for, design for, just use, or are thinking of switching to Wordpress, we’d love to see you there. Its a great place to network with other Wordpress users, especially if you’re looking for local project partners.

The group meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.

Attendance for the first meetup was small, but that is to be expected for any new group. ABC was a little noisy and not entirely conducive to a tech meetup, so plans are still pending for the next meetup location.

In the meantime, get in touch with Ryan if you have any questions or comments about the group. He’s also looking for a someone to design a logo for the WordPress Harrisburg site.

To help spread the word about the group, I’ve created a WordPress Harrisburg badge which you can include on your site or blog. Here is the copy and paste code:
<a href="http://wordpressharrisburg.com/"><img src="WordPress-Harrisburg-Badge-125x125.png" alt="WordPress Harrisburg"></a>

Don’t forget to save the image to your own server and update the path to the badge in the img tag.

Bee People

At a recent tech event, a few people mentioned how nice it was to finally find people that speak your language. This is something that I can really relate to.

I was considered one of the experts at my last job when it came to anything involving computers. Most of my coworkers were capable of only the basics. I was often called a genius when I unjammed the printer without having to call the IT department, or fixed a major problem by simply rebooting the computer. If I mentioned anything involving social media or social networking, I would usually get a lot of blank stares. Occasionally someone would be interested, but mostly because they thought I was just telling a fascinating sci-fi story.

Although it was sometimes flattering to be considered so cutting edge among my peers, most of the time I just laughed to myself and rolled my eyes behind their backs. Later, I started to grit my teeth in annoyance. Eventually, it was one of the main reasons that I walked out the door for good.

I mentioned to my fellow tech event attendees that I have felt like the bee girl in Blind Melon’s video for their song, “No Rain.” I’ve been doing a song and dance for a crowd that doesn’t have a clue. After getting involved with local tweetups and meetups, and regional events such as WordCamp, I think I have finally found my Bee People.

Watch the video below or

Blind Melon – No Rain

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain
I like watchin’ the puddles gather rain
And all I can do is just pour some tea for two
And speak my point of view
But it’s not sane, it’s not sane

I just want someone to say to me, oh oh oh oh
I’ll always be there when you wake, yeah yeah
Ya know I’d like to keep my cheeks dry today, hey
So stay with me and I’ll have it made

And I don’t understand why I sleep all day
And I start to complain that there’s no rain
And all I can do is read a book to stay awake
And it rips my life away, but it’s a great escape
Escape, escape, escape

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain
You don’t like my point of view and I’m insane
It’s not sane, it’s not sane

I just want someone to say to me, oh oh oh oh
I’ll always be there when you wake, yeah yeah
You know I’d like to keep my cheeks dry today, hey
So stay with me and I’ll have it made

I’ll have it made
And I’ll have it made
Oh no no
You know we’re really gonna, really gonna have it made
Gonna have it made
Ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah
